Stenographer is a profession that can translate English or any other language in the region to a coded language referred to as Shorthand and back to the language of origin as well which is up to 200 words per minute. It is the sole profession that does not get influenced much with the emergence of technology. Since this is such a job where an individual must do his bare minimum work i.e. translation alone. Qualifiencies to become a Stenographer

Educational Qualification

(a) Pass in Senior Secondary Examination (10+2) or any other recognized examination. It is not limited in terms of the marks obtained in Senior Secondary Examination or studied subjects. Nevertheless to secure employment is in certain government offices as stenographer at least 60 percent are mandatory at this stage.

Age : It has no limit as far as the age of the candidate is concerned to be a Stenographer. To secure employment in Government sector as a Stenographer, however, there are specified age requirements of the person in the postal service in relation to other details when hiring. This age limit is normally between 18 yrs to 27 yrs. (There are also instances where the upper limits are beyond 30 years)

How to become a Stenographer?

The steps that must be adhered to in order to be a Stenographer include:

Step 1 : An aspiring candidate with 10/10+2 in any stream and possessing good knowledge on English or any other known regional language can attend certain training centres privately to acquire Shorthand. The process of learning shorthand and able to take dictation at least at 80 to 120 words per minutes takes an average of 6 months to 1 year to an average student.

Another way is that candidate can enroll in some ITI (Industrial Training Institution) to undertake a certificate or a diploma course in Shorthand and Typing. The duration of this course is 1yr to 1 and 1/2 yr. Where some fundamental knowledge on typing and shorthand is given to the candidate and a diploma given to the successful candidates.

Education Qualification: Candidates must be Matric pass, which is desirous.

Age: Above 17 years of age

How to get Admission in ITI's

One must pass in the entrance test conducted by these institutions and is admitted on its basis according to merit list. But in a few private, ITI admission is done based on the marks received in the tenth grade.

Step 2 : Having completed this course of shorthand and typings, one can put an application on the job of stenographer in private sectors or can work as a freelancer with some advocates or other high profile personalities.

Alternatively, one can apply against the advertisement of stenographer and typist posted by the departments of the governments. Such vacancies are filled by the agencies such as SSC, UPSC, State service selection Boards, Banking service Recruitment board after passing through the written tests and skill test and then interviews. It absorbs selected candidates in the Government departments as Stenographers.
