Income Tax Officer (Inspector) –Income Tax Inspector Selection Process & Qualification

As the name itself suggests, Income Tax Officer is an officer who handles the income tax issues of the Central Board of Direct Taxes acronym as CBDT which is a department of central government in India. ITO, the Income Tax Officer, as he is popularly referred to is one of the dreaded name in India because there are so many income tax defaulters in our country. The ITO are charged with the responsibility of tracking down of such defaulters and handing them over to the department where they can be forced to pay their tax based on their actual income.

Yet to perform the assigned responsibilities one must be extremely courageous, diligent, upright besides being tactful because he must handle so many high profile personalities that may pull strings at the top ranks to free themselves and consequent prove the officer wrong or objective. It is a task that requires individuals to have fire in their heart but that they can manage themselves and apply as and when they need to be incorporated in their raids and investigation in a judicious manner.

In order to join the Income Tax Officer position in India, the interested aspirants must pass through a selection procedure of written and oral examination by Staff Selection Commission such that the best of the aspirants are only considered.

Income Tax officer eligibility

Educational Qualification : In order to apply to the position of an Income Tax Officer, a person has to have a Bachelor of Degree in any stream.

Age Limits : The candidate should have reached the age of 18 years as of 1 st July of the examination year and should not have their age exceed 27 years as of the 1 st July of that year. The age restriction will be reduced by 3 and 5 years respectively to OBC and SC/ST candidates. It is also the upper age limit that is slackened in favour of some group of employees working under the Government of India and Defense Services Personnel.

What are the qualifications to be an Income Tax Officer?

The aspiring candidates must follow the following in order to become an Income Tax Officer:

Step 1 : The aspirant needs to firstly buy the "Application Form" and the necessary information through the employment newspaper mostly in the month of April (or the official ssc website). forward the duly filled Application form to the regional centres as indicated.

Remark: The examination notification with details about rules and syllabus are announced in the month of April in the Employment News / Rozgar Samachar, Gazette of India and a few major Newspapers in the country.

Step 2 : Preliminary Examination

During the month of May or June, the aspirants are required to take the Preliminary Exam which is two paper exam. The papers are on:

Note: This exam is simply a qualifying examination to the Final exam and scores secured in this examination are not combined to achieve the final score.

Step 3 : Main Examination

The qualified candidates in the Preliminary Exam are supposed to take the final exam. The last test will be evaluated into two sections. Part A will be that of written examination and Part B will be of Personality Test.

Step 4 : Personality Test

The last and last stage is the interview. The interview is grilled to determine the personality and mental capacity of the aspirants. Then the list of the successful candidates is made out.

Income tax Officer is paid grade of between 6500-10500.The Government of India has determined the salary levels of its officers at different posts. Despite the changes they continue to make with new pay commission.

Even workers of same branches can get different pay depending upon the area of posting and responsibility they are performing at a certain time. Besides the salary ITO receive different forms of allowances like Dearness Allowance, City compensatory Allowance, Leave Travel Allowance, Medical and subsidized housing.
